What should I buy with super alloy. Save super alloy. Don't spend it on anything cheap. You probably will spend it to buy mech selector/part selector. When is "mid game and "Late Game. Mid game - around level 50, Late game - maximum level possible ( currently 60 on EN, but will be changed with future updates) 2- Select 3 pilots When you first start the game you are asked to pick 3 pilots. You don't get these pilots right away, instead you get one of them if you do the 1800 gem pilot gacha in the bar. However you will eventually recruit all pilot after you get 60 affection with them in the bar, so it is not generally recommended to roll the pilot gatcha. However here are some recommendations. Artemis: Strong lightning based melee with a lot of mid-range lightning attacks that causes paralysis. Pretty sturdy with its chassis special which is a damage absorb shield. Easily countered with paralysis immunity however and phases out fairly quickly. Astaroth: Tanky, has FS shield, but very slow pre-retrofit. Retrofit version is one of the stronger mid-game tanks. Keep. Bai Hu: Worst one of the 4 holy beasts. Fares better with retrofit but still pretty bad. Scrap if you need alloy, otherwise you can keep it around. Belial: Original Belial is pretty meh. It has a decent action set in theory but acts like a retard sometimes. Retrofit version is very strong as a frontline anti-range tank, however, when piloted by Mutsuki. Bloody Wolf VII: Decent ranged mech. Output is fairly high but I always felt it lacked the power to finish a kill. Either keeping or scrapping is fine. Brunhilde: Average, not top tier for sure, her beam attack element is not very good. However not bottom tier too. well, you get 1 from event and if you get 2 more from gacha, its okay i guess. Dagger Assault Type: Unremarkable. Scrap. Flame Wind: Decent fire damage and homing shots. Fragile and can't do shit if closed in on. You can test it and see if you like its style. If not, scrap. Halpas: Scrap unless you want to build a plane team. Hiei Master: The only viable phantom creater mech in mid-game arena. Has a decent balance of control, disengage and damage. Kinda useless outside of PvP but do keep unless you absolutely need alloy. Kamui: paper armor, dies very quickly, used only in special boss teams, and never in PvP and almost never in PvE. Iis a funnel/drone mech and need special pilots that has drone skills, also you need special parts for it to be at least reasonable Lancelot: Decent ranged beam main gun mech. It's retrofit beats Galahad in terms of burst potential, but pre-retrofit it's kinda meh. Long Dan: High damage ranged secondary gun mech. Fast shots and each shot can knockdown. However, it has major issues hitting smaller objects. You can keep one around but I never bothered with it. Its retrofit added more firepower, but didn't solve the aiming issue. Luna: I almost didn't remember what this is. Scrap unless you want to build a plane team. Metal Slug: Walking 3k alloy. Scrap on sight. Nero: Original Nero is absolute garbage because it's the one melee mech with zero movement actions. It will get kited by any and all things that move faster than itself. Retrofit turns it into a ranged mech and it has fairly good damage, burst, and sustain in that version. Keep just because it's Slokai's canon mech. Heh. Phoenix: Scrap unless you want to build a plane team. Qing Long: Qing Long is one of the best grapple mechs when it's in the mood. When it's not it likes to idle around while being pumped full of lead. Its retrofit is smarter and has better mood often. Keep one around if you aren't in urgent need of alloy. Reno MK3: Decent single shot ranged mech, full elemental damage and has def break as a chassis perk. Sadly its damage is kinda meh and it has issues hitting things due to slow projectile speed. Its retrofit is used by some people as a defbreaker for blue poster bosses but isn't mandatory. Scrap if you need alloy. Riot Police: Good mid-range tank that uses shotgun and a shield. Very tanky, and has a special action that pulls the entire enemy team towards it for like 3 seconds (enemy team is disabled in this process. Popular tank in the mid-game phase. Thor: Thor in itself is only half decent. However, later on when retrofitting is introduced into the game, retrofitted Thor (Thor ODS) is one of the best PvP mechs even now on CN/JP. Keep if you happen to get this. Do note you need 5 copies of Thor to retrofit. Tsukikage: Decent melee mech and the best mech to put Linda in prior to getting Sin3/Kaguya/Susanoo. Unlock its 2nd action asap, otherwise it's semi-retarded. Valkyrie S: Decent ranged missile mech, chassis perk allows +1 usage of pilot active, so putting Guin in there will give 2 team heals which is nice for early game. Damage-wise, has potential with Trista as pilot, but otherwise mediocre. Valk S can be retrofitted into Valk SC later, which is a pretty good melee mech that can work with a number of tier 1 melee pilots. Keep if you get extra copies. Vassago: You start with it, you need no dupes to max upgrade it, and you can change it's form to fit your need. Might as well keep it. Xuan Wu: Better than Qing Long at grappling - Xuan Wu can permagrapple anything that doesn't have grapple protection - that is, if Xuan Wu can touch the opponent. Has major issues closing in on opponents pre-retrofit. Personally I would suggest keeping because when it gets the grapple on the opponent it's really a sight to behold. Zhu Que: The best mech out of the 4 beasts. Strong fire-based melee mech with mid-range capabilties and action for closing in on ranged enemy mechs. Works great with its canon pilot Hong Xiao Yu. The retrofit version is the best mid-game diver prior to certain whale tier mechs. -7- Development Formulas by pyre_light. You can ONLY develop 1 unit a day (Even if you spend 100 gems to instant finish it. Here is a link to devlopment formulas put together by pyre_light. Three-Minute History on the Taiping Heres a quickie. As I was scrolling through my old subscriptions yesterday, lo and behold I was on Jabzys channel page, six minutes after he uploaded an updated Taiping Rebellion video. Its… troubling. Fortunately, its not even four minutes long (as per the channel name) so it shouldnt take too long to deal with, right? Well, if hes going to compress everything into three minutes, I have no qualms about being as picky as possible about his wording, though I will excuse a degree of omission. A degree. Link here 0:02 – in the 1830s, in southern China, a man named Hong Xiuquan failed the entrance exams to the Chinese civil service four times. After the fourth exam in 1837, he began to enter deliriums and have visions where he was visited by a great paternal figure in the sky… Pedantry Point 1: Hongs fourth exam failure was in 1843; 1837 was his third failure. 1 Pedantry Point 2: Hong had visions where he ascended to heaven and visited the great paternal figure, not the reverse. 1 Forgivable Omission 1: Jabzy doesnt bring up the reading of the Good Words to Admonish the Age after the second failure in 1836. However, the strict chronology of events is slightly controversial among historians so this can slide somewhat. 0:20 – and over the next few years he began studying the Christian literature brought in by early Protestant missionaries to the region, and he believed he was the brother of Jesus. Only comment here is thats a slightly odd order to put it in – wouldnt it have made more sense to start with how the visions led him to believe he was the son of this paternal figure, and that the missionary literature led him to conclude that this figure was God? 0:28 – Along with the religious preaching, he also spoke out against the Qing dynasty, thus appealing to the population in this period of turmoil. background image So the main issue here isnt the text, which is basically correct, but rather the image… Pedantry Point 3: This aint Hong, chief. There are only 2 known images of Hong Xiuquan: this one, included in J. -M. Callery and M. Yvans History of the Insurrection in China (1853) and this portrait painted around March 1861 in Shanghai, allegedly of Hong (more details can be found here. This image, which must have served as Jabzys reference, is of uncertain provenance but is most certainly modern. 0:35 – The increasing population left millions poor and unemployed, and the ruling Qing dynasty had by 1842 been humiliated by the British in the First Opium War, background image plus the Qing were also Manchus from the north and the more populous Han Chinese saw them as foreign invaders, background image so by January 1851 Hong had gained tens of thousands of followers and established the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in Guangxi. While the population point is correct, Pedantry Point 4: ‘National Humilation as a concept emerged in the 1890s and there was no substantial domestic reaction to the Opium War. 2 Pedantry Point 5: The first linked picture depicts a scene from the Second Opium War, namely the storming of the Taku Forts in 1860. In 1839-42 British troops in China still wore black shakoes, not covered kepis. Pedantry Point 6: It is unclear to what extent anti-Manchuism actually existed among the Han Chinese population at the time the Taiping War broke out, and some historians such as Pamela Kyle Crossley have argued that the Taiping were in fact the first to present a serious challenge to Manchu legitimacy on ethnic grounds. 3 Pedantry Point 7: The second linked picture depicts Han Chinese mercenaries called ‘braves (yong 勇) not Manchu Bannermen. Know how I know this (other than the character on the jacket) Well, the image referenced is illustration 2 on Plate B of Ian Heaths The Taiping Rebellion Osprey Men-At-Arms book, which clearly does not mark the figure as Manchu. 0:57 – The Chinese tried to suppress the movement the following month but Hongs well-organized followers were able to drive the Qing away. background image Pedantry Point 8: Werent the Taiping also ‘the Chinese, though? Pedantry Point 9: Thats not a correct flag, nor are those Taiping soldiers. The Taiping had no national flag, and while the Wikipedia page for the kingdom has a flag, it is a speculative piece derived from a military banner found in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Museum in Nanjing. The archers depicted are obviously Qing thanks to their clothing and hairstyle, and the image reference was probably this composite image of various Qing troops, a version of which is included on p. 18 of Philip Jowetts Imperial Chinese Armies 1840-1911, another Osprey MAA. To digress momentarily, I say it is a composite because the musketeer at the back is quite obviously a copy of the man in this photo, and the drawn archer of this one. 1:03 – From here they moved east and captured Yongan, background image and in September Hong was proclaimed Heavenly King. Pedantry Point 10: The map shows the Taiping going east to Yongan in Fujian, but the problem is they didnt do that. They went north to Yongan in Guangxi, now known as Mengxian. This map on p. 157 of Spences Gods Chinese Son (apologies for the blurriness) shows the relationship between Yongan and the Taipings original headquarters in Guiping – look in the southwest corner. 1:09 – The Qing laid siege to Yongan but in April 1852 the Taiping were able to smash their way through the besiegers and began to advance again. background image Pedantry Point 11: The soldiers depicted are members of the Ever-Victorious Army, which for one fought for the Qing, for another would not exist for another ten years, and for yet another are depicted armed with P1853 Enfields, which as the name suggests were still a year in the future. For those interested, the image reference is illustration D1 in Heath. 1:18 – They sacked the city of Quanzhou… background image Pedantry Point 12: Wrong Quanzhou. The Taiping sacked Quanzhou 全州 in Guangxi, not Quanzhou 泉州 in Fujian (see the map again. 1:19 – and pushed north, gaining thousands of new recruits on the way, and captured the important city of Wuhan in early 1853. background image Again, see the Spence map linked above. The Taiping route of march makes much more sense when you look at the river systems and see that theyre tracing the Xiang River up to Wuchang, not zigzagging across to Fujian and back. Pendantry point 13: Wuhan was not known as such until 1927. In 1853 it still consisted of three separate cities – Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. Forgivable Omission 2: The Taiping lost a significant amount of their original converts and senior leadership after leaving Yongan, including Hongs second convert, the South King Feng Yunshan, and the West King Xiao Chaogui, who had claimed to channel the voice of Jesus. However, in the grand scheme of things this isnt strictly necessary to include in a brief overview such as this. 1:28 – they soon left Wuhan but took with them the city's gold and, most importantly, boats. This new navy allowed the Taiping to sail on the Yangtze River and conquer Nanjing, the historic capital of China. Pedantry Point 14: The Taiping actually already had a substantial fleet, gathered during the failed siege of Changsha. 4 Pedantry Point 15: Nanjing was a historic capital of China, but not the. It was the capital of the Eastern Wu, the Jin and most of the Southern dynasties from around 220-580, of the Southern Tang successor state from 937-976, and of the Ming from 1368-1421. 1:36 – Nanjing was then made the capital of the Heavenly state background image and they pushed north on Peking with 70, 000 men… Pedantry Point 16: See Point 9. Pedantry Point 17: ‘Peking? Seriously? 1:45 – but poor supply lines and costly conflicts with the Qing forced them to retreat in 1855, however the Qing could not capitalize on the Taiping's failure because of a number of issues facing the country: in the mid 1850s the Nian rebellion intensified, in 1855 the Miao revolted in Guizhou, the Small Knife society rebelled in Shanghai, Muslims rebelled in Dali, the Nepalese invaded Tibet, the British started the Second Opium War and the Russians annexed territory in the north. Pedantry Point 18: The rebellion in Yunnan was not solely restricted to Muslims or to Dali – all three major portions of Yunnan rose up, and the indigenous peoples made up a major part of those uprisings. Pedantry Point 19: The British only started the Arrow (Second Opium) War thanks to the French declaring support. Pedantry Point 20: The Russians annexed outer Manchuria as part of the settlements ending the Arrow War. Forgivable Omission 3: The Red Turban Revolt also happened in Guangdong and Guangxi in 1854-6. 2:11 – But inside Nanjing the Taiping were also dealing with problems of their own. Hong retreated into his palace and away from public life, and many of his strict laws were not being followed. Plus, his subordinate kings began to struggle for control, and as part of the Tianjing Incident tens of thousands were killed, plus two of his subordinate kings, the North King and East King, died, leaving the Yi King in control of most of the military. Pedantry Point 21: Obvious Wiki use is obvious – no historian Im aware of uses the term ‘Tianjing Incident. Forgivable Omission 3: Also killed were the generals Qin Rigang and Hu Yihuang. Unforgivable Omission 1: Hong himself was responsible for ordering the East Kings assassination. This was not just squabbling over the #2 spot, Yang Xiuqing (the East King) had ambitions to take the throne. Omitted Date 1: This took place in 1856. 2:33 – However, Hong feared his new power so the Yi King, fearing been executed, fled with most of his armies, greatly weakening the Taiping forces. Pedantry Point 22: Shi Dakais exact motives for the western expedition are somewhat unclear, but included the death of his own family as well as Hongs promotion of his brothers to fill the roles once held by the other kings. However, mutual fear does not seem, at least explicitly, to have factored into the decision substantially. Not least because, if Shi feared execution so much, his remaining in charge in Nanjing for the former half of 1857 seems somewhat inexplicable. 5 Speaking of which, Omitted Date 2: Shi made a break for it in 1857. 2:40 – Hongs cousin Hong Rengan took over the running of the kingdom and tried to reform the nations economy and mindset, but in 1860 the other military commanders launched a campaign to expand. They took Huangzhou and Suzhou and then assaulted Shanghai. Omitted Date 3: Hong Rengan came to power in 1859. Forgivable Omission 4: Hongs two brothers held de facto power in the interim between the departure of Shi Dakai and the arrival of Hong Rengan, but as they lack much significance besides, their exclusion is understandable. Plain Wrong 1: The eastward offensive of 1860 was masterminded by Hong Rengan himself, who had been confident that the Western powers based in Shanghai would be receptive to the Taiping. 6 2:54 – now the Taiping had tried to form alliances with the Western powers, but the Western powers did not like this new threat to Shanghai, as they now had considerable commercial interest in the city after the Opium Wars were concluded. Pedantry Point 24: The Taiping had not attempted to formally engage with the Western powers until Hong Rengan, and they did so by approaching Shanghai. Pedantry Point 25: The Taiping approached Shanghai in the summer of 1860, and British and French troops attacked Taiping positions on 19 August, three full days before attacking the Qing-held Taku Forts. The Arrow (Second Opium) War would not formally conclude until 24 October. As such, the Opium Wars had not yet concluded by the time the Taiping approached Shanghai. 7 3:05 – So, during the Battle of Shanghai, which lasted until 1862, thousands of British and French aided the Qing in driving the Taiping back. Omitted Date 4: The beginning of the Shanghai campaign goes unstated. Wiki alleges that it commenced in July 1861, but in practical terms the Taiping did not renew their offensive until January 1862, with fighting prior to that consisting largely of a slow campaign of sieges against Taiping garrisons undertaken largely by Frederick Townsend Wards mercenaries. 3:11 – The Qing, led by the likes of British General Charles George Gordon, pursued the Taiping back to Nanjing and laid siege to the city in 1864. background image Unforgivable Omission 2: Zeng Guofans Hunan Army, which had fought the Taiping constantly since 1853 and which actually laid siege to Nanjing at the end of May 1862. Plain Wrong 2: Charles Gordon only led the Ever-Victorious Army, which isnt whats depicted in the damn background image! Come on, you did the EVA before! Plain Wrong 3: Charles Gordon had temporarily resigned as a result of the Suzhou Massacre in December 1863, and stayed on until the end of May 1864 mainly to oversee the EVAs disbandment. The Anhui Army and its auxiliary corps like the EVA played a minimal role in the capture of Nanjing, which was primarily a Hunan Army endeavour – as stated above, Nanjing had already been under siege from loyalist forces for one and a half years by the start of 1864, let alone the late spring when the eastern armies made united with the western. 3:17 – The constant back and forth of armies left the countryside plundered and many were dying of starvation and disease, plus the armies constantly massacred cities inhabitants, all of which helped bring the estimated death toll of the conflict to around 20 million, making it one of the most deadly events in human history. Pedantry Point 26: We dont actually know the death toll for the Taiping War to any precise level of detail. 3:34 – But the Qing troops finally entered Nanjing in the summer of 1864. There, they found the people starving and Hong had already died, possibly of food poisoning, weeks earlier. Pedantry Point 27: he Qing had been laying siege to the place for 25 months. Is it surprising that people were starving? 7 3:43 – Fearing repercussions, many of the Taiping fled to Southeast Asia, where they formed their own bandit armies, and there they became particularly powerful and fought against the Vietnamese, the French, and the Siamese. Omitted Date 5: The Chinese bandit armies in northern Vietnam formed from 1865 onward. Plain Wrong 4: The Black Flag Army of Liu Yongfu and the Yellow Flag Army of Pan Lunsi, which did indeed fight the Vietnamese and French, were not actually made up of ex-Taiping to any substantial degree. They were largely made up of Chinese rebels, yes, but they were splinter factions of the Kingdom of Yanling, a distinct rebel state in western Guangxi that, although claiming Taiping affiliations, was not connected to the state in Nanjing to any reasonable extent. 9 So in total, I count: 27 points of pedantry, 5 omitted dates, 4 forgivable omissions, 2 unforgivable omissions, and 4 instances of just being plain wrong. Which puts us at a nice 42 (counted) errors or noticeable omissions in 3 minutes and 50 seconds, or one every 5. 5 seconds! Im sure I probably could have found more but I think Ill be nice and not do that. Gouge Away" and "Hey" are highly acclaimed by critics, while the album, along with debut LP Surfer Rosa, is often seen as the band's strongest work. Doolittle has continued to sell consistently well in the years since its release, and in 1995 was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album has been cited as inspirational by many alternative artists, while numerous music publications have ranked it as one of the most influential albums ever. A 2003 poll of NME writers ranked Doolittle as the second-greatest album of all time, 2] Rolling Stone placed the album at 227 on its list of " The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. 3] and Pitchfork ranked it as the fourth best album of the 80s. [4] Background [ edit] Following their highly regarded but commercially unsuccessful 1988 album Surfer Rosa, 5] the band embarked on a European tour with fellow Bostonians Throwing Muses, before beginning a tour of North American states. During this time Black Francis, the group's frontman and principal songwriter, began to write new material for a future album, with songs such as "Dead. Hey. Tame" and "There Goes My Gun" emerging through the course of the year. [6] Versions of the newly composed songs were recorded during several sessions for John Peel 's radio show in 1988, while a live recording of "Hey" appeared on a free EP circulated with a 1988 edition of Sounds. [7] Doolittle ' s lyrics contain several biblical references—principal Pixies songwriter Black Francis wanted the album to be operatic like the biblical Whore of Babylon In mid-1988, the Pixies began to record demo sessions while on breaks from touring. The band headed to the Boston recording studio Eden Sound, which at the time comprised a small room in the basement of a hair salon. They recorded at the studio for a week, in circumstances similar to the previous year's the Purple Tape sessions. Francis gave the demo tape and upcoming album the provisional title of Whore, though he later claimed his natural father had originally suggested the name. Francis has clarified that he was thinking of the word "in the more traditional sense. the operatic, biblical sense. as in the great whore of Babylon. 8] After completing the demo tape, band manager Ken Goes suggested two producers for the album; Liverpudlian Gil Norton and American Ed Stasium. The band had previously worked with Norton while recording the single version of " Gigantic " in May 1988. Francis had no preference, although Ivo Watts-Russell, head of the band's label 4AD, wanted Norton to produce the next album. Norton was hired as producer, with Stasium not even approached for the position. [9] Norton arrived in Boston on October 31, 1988, and first visited Francis' apartment to review the album's demos. The two talked about arrangements, and spent two days intensively analyzing the album's songs. Norton learned to gauge Francis' reaction to changing arrangements, and later observed that the frontman "doesn't like to do anything twice. Norton spent a further two weeks in pre-production to familiarise himself with the Pixies' sound. [10] Recording and production [ edit] Recording sessions for the album began on October 31, 1988, at Downtown Recorders in Boston, Massachusetts, at the time a professional 24-track studio. 4AD allowed the Pixies a budget of 40, 000, excluding producer's fees. This was a modest sum for a 1980s major label album; however, it quadrupled the amount spent on the band's previous album, Surfer Rosa. Along with Norton, two assistant recording engineers and two second assistants were assigned to the project. The sessions lasted three weeks, concluding on November 23, 11] with "nearly a song a day" being recorded. [12] Production and mixing began on November 28. The band relocated to Carriage House Studios, a residential studio in Stamford, Connecticut, to oversee production and record further tracks. [13] Norton recruited Steve Haigler as mixing engineer, whom he had worked with at Fort Apache Studios. During production, Haigler and Norton added layers of guitars and vocals to songs, including overdubbed guitars on " Debaser " and double tracking vocals on "Wave of Mutilation. During the recordings, Norton advised Francis to alter several songs; a noted example being "There Goes My Gun" which was originally intended as a much faster Hüsker Dü -style song. However, at Norton's advice, Francis slowed down the tempo. [9] Norton's suggestions were not always welcome, and several instances of advice to add verses and increase track length contributed to the front man's building frustration. Eventually, Francis took Norton to a record store, where he handed him a copy of Buddy Holly 's Greatest Hits, in which most of the songs are about two minutes long. [14] He told Norton, If it's good enough for Buddy Holly. 15] In a Rolling Stone interview, Francis later recalled that "this record is him trying to make us, shall I say, commercial, and us trying to remain somewhat grungy. 16] Production continued until December 12, 1988, with Norton and Haigler adding extra effects, including gated reverb to the mix. The master tapes were then sent for final post-production later that month. [17] Music [ edit] Debaser" is the opening track of Doolittle. This sample contains the first chorus and the bridge into the second verse. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" is the seventh track from Doolittle. While tracks such as "Tame" and " Crackity Jones " are fast and aggressive, and incorporate the band's trademark loud–quiet dynamic, 18] other songs such as "Silver. I Bleed" and "Here Comes Your Man" reveal a quieter, slower and more melodic temperament. [19] With Doolittle, the band began to incorporate further instruments into their sound; for instance, Monkey Gone to Heaven" features two violins and two cellos. "Tame" is based on a three chord formula; including Joey Santiago 's playing a " Hendrix chord " over the main bass progression. [20] I Bleed" is melodically simple, and is formed around a single rhythmical repetition. Some songs are influenced by other genres of music; while "Crackity Jones" has a distinctly Spanish sound, and incorporates G ♯ and A triads over a C ♯ pedal, the song's rhythm guitar, played by Francis, starts with an eighth-note downstroke typical of punk rock music. [21] Lyrics [ edit] The lyrical themes explored on Doolittle range from the surrealism of " Debaser. to the environmental catastrophe of " Monkey Gone to Heaven. The prostitutes of "Mr. Grieves. Tame" and "Hey" share space with the Biblical analogies of "Dead" and "Gouge Away. Black Francis often claimed that Doolittle' s lyrics were words which just "fit together nicely" and that "the point [of the album] is to experience it, to enjoy it, to be entertained by it. 22] Francis wrote all the material for the album with the exception of "Silver" which he co-wrote with Kim Deal. [23] The album's opening track "Debaser" references surrealism, a theme that runs throughout the album. "Debaser" alludes to Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí 's 1929 surrealist film Un Chien Andalou, and the lyric "slicing up eyeballs" refers to an early scene in the film. [24] Surrealism heavily influenced Francis in his college years and throughout his career with the Pixies. In 1989, Francis expressed his interest in surrealism and its influence on his songwriting method to The New York Times by stating "I got into avant-garde movies and Surrealism as an escape from reality. To me, Surrealism is totally artificial. I recently read an interview with the director David Lynch who said he had ideas and images but that he didn't know exactly what they meant. That's how I write. 25] Another of the album's main themes is environmental catastrophe. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" deals with man's destruction of the ocean and "confusion of man's place in the universe. As Francis put it: On one hand, it's this big organic toilet. Things get flushed and repurified or decomposed and it's this big, dark, mysterious place. It's also a very mythological place where there are octopus's gardens, the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis, and mermaids. 26] Monkey Gone to Heaven" is concerned with man's relationship to the divine, a theme shared with "Mr. Grieves. Two songs on Doolittle are fashioned after Biblical stories: the story of David and Bathsheba in "Dead" and Samson and Delilah in "Gouge Away. 27] Francis' fascination with Biblical themes can be traced back to his teenage years; when he was twelve, he and his parents joined an evangelical church linked to the Assemblies of God. This background was to be an influence in Doolittle, where he referred to the Devil being "six" and God being "seven" in "Monkey Gone to Heaven. Other songs explored eccentric subjects, such as in "Wave of Mutilation" which Francis described as being about "Japanese businessmen doing murder-suicides with their families because they'd failed in business, and they're driving off a pier into the ocean. 28] The sea and underwater themes of "Wave of Mutilation" which also feature in "Mr. Grieves" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" are explorations of one arena for man's death and destruction. [29] Ben Sisario points out that the album begins ( Debaser" and ends ( Gouge Away" with songs about violence being done to eyes. [30. Crackity Jones " covers another offbeat subject; Francis' roommate in his student exchange trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, who he described as a "weird psycho gay roommate. 31] Doolittle also references more ostensibly conventional subjects. "La La Love You" sung by the band's drummer David Lovering, is a love song —though with its "first base, second base, third base, home run" break, it's been referred to as "a dig at the very idea of a love song. 32] Francis gave it to Lovering as a song to sing, like a Ringo thing" Lovering at first refused to sing, but Norton said that soon he was unable to "get him away from the microphone. 33] As well as lead vocals on "La La Love You" Lovering played bass guitar on "Silver" with Deal playing slide guitar; this arrangement did not occur again. Packaging and title [ edit] As Loud As Hell" by Simon Larbalestier, from the Doolittle cover booklet. The image references lyrics in "I Bleed. Doolittle was the first album where Simon Larbalestier, the Pixies' cover photographer, and Vaughan Oliver, the band's cover artist, had access to the lyrics. According to Larbalestier, this "made a fundamental difference. 34] The surrealist and abstract images throughout the album booklet are linked to the album's content. "Gouge Away" is represented by a picture of a spoon containing hair, laid across a woman's torso; a direct pictorial representation of heroin, with the spoon and the hair being horses. [35] I Bleed" is referenced with the image "As Loud As Hell" the image shows "a ringing bell" with a set of teeth; this references the line "it shakes my teeth. Walking with the Crustaceans" is a visual representation of the lyrics to "Wave of Mutilation. Larbalestier later commented that he was interested in "early Surrealist stuff" at this time. [34] During the recording sessions, Whore was discarded as a potential album title, after Oliver changed the cover artwork idea to a monkey and halo cover. Francis later explained his rationale for the move: 36] I thought people were going to think I was some kind of anti-Catholic or that I'd been raised Catholic and trying to get into this Catholic naughty-boy stuff. A monkey with a halo, calling it Whore, that would bring all kinds of shit that wouldn't be true. So I said I'd change the title. Francis then named the album Doolittle, from the "Mr. Grieves" lyric "Pray for a man in the middle / One that talks like Doolittle. 37] Release [ edit] In the months following Surfer Rosa, the Pixies' management fielded calls from a number of labels. Elektra Records A&R scout Peter Lubin first saw the band in October 1988, when they opened for The Jesus and Mary Chain. He immediately sought to convince the band to sign to his label. Pixies contracted to Elektra Records during a UK spring tour in 1989. Elektra followed by releasing a live promotional album, which contained two songs from their forthcoming album, Debaser" and "Gouge Away" along with a selection of earlier material. [7] However Elektra had not yet attained distribution rights to the band's forthcoming album. 4AD, then a small British independent record label, held worldwide distribution rights to the Pixies, but did not have access to distribution outside of the United Kingdom; the band had had to import all its previous records from Europe. The Pixies' management sought international distribution; and while negotiations with Elektra and other record companies began in the third quarter of 1988, they were only completed just two weeks before Doolittle' s release on April 2, 1989. PolyGram had already secured Canadian distribution rights by that time. [38] Doolittle was released in the United Kingdom on April 17, 1989, and in the United States the following day. Throughout the States, helped by Elektra Records ' major label status, retail displays were constructed for the record, and " Monkey Gone to Heaven. the first single from the album, was released to radio stations for inclusion on playlists. [39] Doolittle ' s chart performance in the United States was unremarkable; the album entered the Billboard 200 at number 171. However, with the help of college radio -play of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" Doolittle eventually rose to number 98 and spent two weeks in the Top 100. [40] In Britain, the record reached number eight on the UK Album Chart. [41] This chart placing was an unexpected success for the band as their previous two records, Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa, had failed to reach as high on the British charts. [42] In June 1989, 4AD released "Here Comes Your Man" as the album's second single. It reached number three on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 56 in the UK Singles Chart. [41] 43] It was not the last single from the album: in 1997, Debaser" was released as a single to promote the Death to the Pixies compilation. Reissues [ edit] To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album, 4AD announced that a deluxe edition of the album, titled Doolittle 25, was to be released January 12, 2015, containing unreleased B-sides, demos, and two full Peel sessions. By early 1992, while the band were supporting U2 on their Zoo TV Tour, the album was selling 1, 500 copies per week. The middle of 1993, two years after the band's last album, Trompe le Monde, saw sales average 1, 200 copies per week. Doolittle was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1995. [56] Ten years after the breakup, Doolittle was still selling between 500 and 1, 000 copies a week; the reunion tour saw sales creep back up to 1, 200 copies per week. At the end of 2005, best estimates put total sales in America at between 800, 000 and one million copies. [57] As of 2015, sales in the United States have exceeded 834, 000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. [58] Reaction to Doolittle was positive in general, with the album garnering praise from several major music publications. NME writer Edwin Pouncey commented that "the songs on Doolittle have the power to make you literally jump out of your skin with excitement. 59] Q critic Peter Kane said that Doolittle ' s "carefully structured noise and straightforward rhythmic insistence makes perfect sense. 60] Tim Rolston of The Daily Telegraph praised Doolittle as "a scintillating rock'n'roll album" and the Pixies' finest half-hour so far. 61] Several other publications ran positive reviews of the album, including the British music weekly Record Mirror, The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune. [59] Robert Christgau of ' The Village Voice ' wrote, They're in love and they don't know why—with rock and roll, which is heartening in a time when so many college dropouts have lost touch with the verities. [62] Legacy [ edit] The sudden loud to quiet dynamic present on Doolittle, most notably in "Tame" has been very influential on alternative rock. After writing " Smells Like Teen Spirit. both Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana thought: this really sounds like the Pixies. People are really going to nail us for this. 63] Producer Gil Norton usually receives much credit for the album's dynamic, and is sought by bands seeking a similar sound. [64] The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha described Doolittle as less raw than Surfer Rosa but "more listenable" and "Here Comes Your Man" as a "classic pop record. [65] Band relationships [ edit] During the recording of Doolittle, tensions between Francis and Deal became visible to band members and the production team. Bickering and standoffs between the two marred the recording sessions and led to increased stress among the band members. [66] John Murphy, Deal's husband at the time, later recalled that with Doolittle it "went from just all fun to work. 67] Exhaustion from touring and from releasing three records in two years contributed to the friction. This culminated at the end of the US post- Doolittle "Fuck or Fight" tour, where they were too tired to attend the end-of-tour party. I always loved the story of Dr Dolittle. The trailer for this movie looks awful and I have ZERO interest in seeing it. I watched the original Dr Doolittle when I was growing up with my family on TCM, I always thought it was pretty good except for too much singing. I don't think animals are supposed to talk like in the original movie which makes more sense, given the time period of when it was made it became a classic movie but took time just like the Wizard of Oz did when it failed at the box office.
